The Met Office is forecasting heavy rain and breezy conditions for Northampton, Northamptonshire, on 5 February 2026. Forecast guidance shows the chance of rain rising to around 90% at times during the day, which could lead to standing water on roads and difficult driving conditions.

Wind gusts are forecast to reach around 31 mph — classed as a strong breeze — which, combined with heavy rain, can blow winter debris into drains and gullies. Local agencies, including West Northamptonshire Council, are monitoring the situation in the town’s low-lying areas.

Motorists using the A45 Nene Valley Way should expect spray and standing water that may slow journeys. The Environment Agency is monitoring river levels on the River Nene (Nene Valley gauging station) as part of flood-risk management.

Low-lying neighbourhoods such as St James, Far Cotton and the Billing Aquadrome are at particular risk of surface-water or river-related flooding when soils are saturated. The River Nene Catchment Flood Management Plan sets out long-term measures to manage flood risk across the catchment.

Flood-storage measures such as the Northampton Washlands — an upstream storage area designed to hold excess river water — can be used to protect the town centre if required.
