Luton Point management said in a statement on 7 February 2026 that it wanted to reassure residents and shoppers about the safety and purpose of a new biometric camera system installed at the centre. The clarification follows several days of social-media concern that the equipment was recording shoppers’ faces and personal information.

The centre — rebranded from The Mall Luton to Luton Point in July 2024 after its acquisition by Frasers Group — said the cameras are being used to deter shoplifting and keep people safe. Management said the technology has been implemented with privacy-by-design features, and that facial templates are deleted almost immediately where there is no match to a pre-existing watchlist of known offenders.

Some community members had complained that a recently installed “biometric stall” or enhanced camera unit appeared to be tracking people’s movements around the shopping centre. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has said that facial recognition technology must be lawful, fair and proportionate and that deployments should include appropriate safeguards and oversight.

The centre’s statement comes after Bedfordshire Police deployed live facial recognition technology in the town centre in September 2025. Luton Point told reporters that its system complies with the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025; that Act received Royal Assent in June 2025 and several of its data-protection provisions were brought into force in February 2026.
