Councillor Jim Robbins, Leader of Swindon Borough Council, issued a two-part progress update on 8 February 2026 outlining how town-centre regeneration projects are moving from planning into delivery.

A central element is the Fleming Way bus boulevard, which officially opened on 31 August 2025. The scheme remodelled Fleming Way — lowering the road and removing the underpass — to create a more direct, pedestrian-friendly link between the train station and the town centre.

Demolition work has begun at the former bus station (New Bridge Close). The site was cleared in early January 2026 to make way for a proposed regional entertainment venue intended to replace the ageing Wyvern Theatre; the project is at demolition and land‑clearance stage and detailed design, funding and construction remain subject to further approvals. Separately, the council has exchanged a development agreement with developer SevenCapital to progress plans to refurbish and reopen the Oasis Leisure Centre; that programme is still dependent on planning and delivery timetables.

Proposals for the town also include a modern/modular theatre concept for the Cultural Quarter (currently at proposal and funding stage) and the council plans to publish an investors’ prospectus and an updated economic growth strategy in 2026 to attract private-sector investment. These measures form part of a wider aim to make Swindon town centre a destination for culture and leisure as well as transport.
