South Derbyshire CVS (SDCVS) has launched a recruitment drive in February 2026 to find volunteers to support lonely and isolated adults in Swadlincote and across South Derbyshire. The initiative, part of the Connect South Derbyshire work and listed as the Connect Befriending Service, aims to help residents aged 18 and over who feel cut off from their community by providing regular companionship and friendly conversation.

People who sign up through the South Derbyshire Volunteer Force can choose to visit residents in their homes or provide support over the telephone. The role typically involves weekly contact (for example, a 30-minute phone call or a one-hour home visit) and simple tasks such as chatting, listening to stories, and discussing any concerns to help residents feel more connected to their community.

New volunteers undergo safeguarding and screening checks — including a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check and reference checks — and complete a training programme before being matched with a local resident for regular sessions. The programme aligns with the priorities set out in the South Derbyshire District Council Plan 2024–2028, which emphasises supporting communities and improving health and wellbeing across the district.

According to Befriending Networks, the Connect Befriending Service is a free service that provides a vital lifeline to residents who are isolated for any reason. The SDCVS service is based at The Hive in Swadlincote (The Hive, Top Floor Unit G, Sharpe’s Industrial Estate, Alexandra Road, Swadlincote, DE11 9AZ). Residents interested in volunteering or seeking support can find information and apply via the South Derbyshire Volunteer Force website.
