West Northamptonshire Council will close Northampton High Street in Northamptonshire on Friday, 20 February 2026, to carry out essential carriageway repairs. The work is being done to fix potholes and improve the road surface following damage reported after a wet winter season.

The closure will take place between 9:30am and 3:00pm to avoid the busiest times for morning and evening commuters. The work will focus on the stretch of the road between George Row and the junction with The Drapery and Mercers Row.

Drivers and delivery vehicles will be diverted along a signposted route involving Bridge Street and Gold Street. Motorists are being advised to expect short delays of around 15–20 minutes while the High Street is closed to traffic.

Bus passengers will also see changes to their usual travel, and Stagecoach Midlands has warned that some stops may be temporarily relocated. Passengers should check Stagecoach Midlands service updates and the council’s notices for confirmed stop locations and timings. Residents can view the specific diversion route and live traffic updates on the One.Network map.

While the road is closed to vehicles, the High Street will remain open for pedestrians so they can still reach local shops and businesses. The council says these repairs are necessary to keep the town centre safe and to help prepare for the busier spring shopping season. The works will be carried out by West Northamptonshire Council with their highways contractor, Kier Transportation.
