West Northamptonshire Council officers announced on 10 February 2026 the results of a two‑day enforcement operation that removed thousands of illegal tobacco and vape products from shops in Northampton, Northamptonshire.
Officers from West Northamptonshire Trading Standards, supported by Northamptonshire Police and tobacco‑detection dog teams, visited nine convenience stores in and around the town centre (seizures were made at eight of the premises) during the operation on 1–2 February 2026. In total, officers confiscated 4,374 packets of illicit cigarettes, about 18.4kg of hand‑rolling tobacco and 654 illegal disposable vapes. Some goods were hidden in sophisticated under‑counter or under‑floor concealment units and in vehicles parked nearby.
Many of the disposable vapes seized were non‑compliant with UK limits on device capacity and nicotine strength; trading standards and public‑health bodies have warned that illicit and non‑compliant devices can contain untested chemicals and, in some cases, mislabelled nicotine content. National Trading Standards has also published warnings about illegal vape products (including findings that some items marketed as nicotine‑free contained nicotine and that many devices exceed permitted size or strength limits).
Teams also seized almost 18.4kg of hand‑rolling tobacco that did not carry the required UK health warnings.
