Nexus has announced that Metro passengers in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, will face revised timetables and longer journey times from Monday 16 February to Friday 20 February 2026. The five-day disruption follows a major closure of part of the North Tyneside loop so essential renewal work can be carried out.
The closure will take place between St James and Shiremoor so that workers can replace track and sleepers as part of Nexus’s ongoing Asset Renewal / modernisation programme. Nexus says these improvements are intended to keep the Metro safe and reliable for years to come.
Although the physical works are concentrated in North Tyneside, Nexus says the closure requires a system-wide recalibration of timetables. As a result, services on the Green Line (South Hylton to the Airport) will operate to revised departure times to avoid operational bottlenecks at busy interchanges. Passengers should expect usual departure times to change and are advised to check station posters and the Nexus app for the updated timetables.
A replacement bus service (number 900) will call at, or close to, the affected stations for those who need to travel through the closed section. Residents are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time for journeys during the five-day period. Nexus expects normal train services to resume on Saturday 21 February 2026.
