A major West End musical is coming to Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, for a three-week summer run. The multi-award-winning Moulin Rouge! The Musical will play at the Sunderland Empire from 5 June to 27 June 2026.
The production is part of the show’s first-ever World Tour and is produced by Global Creatures. The visit is expected to bring a large-scale theatrical event to the city, giving residents access to a high-budget West End production without travelling to London.
Carmen Pavlovic, CEO and lead producer at Global Creatures, said: “It is incredibly exciting that the Sunderland Empire will host Moulin Rouge! The Musical next year. Sunderland is such a welcoming and lively city… we know that the bohemians and artisans of Montmartre will be embraced with open arms.” The musical’s score combines over 70 songs — including tracks by Beyoncé and Elton John — in a pop-infused jukebox arrangement.
The Sunderland Empire is one of the largest theatres in the North East and, following a 2004 refurbishment that expanded the stage and fly tower, is capable of hosting the production’s elaborate set. The show’s signature scenic pieces — a large red windmill and a giant blue elephant — are iconic elements of the stage design.
Local hotels, restaurants and shops are expected to benefit from audiences visiting the city during the run. The Sunderland engagement follows other big touring productions that have recently visited the venue, including the RSC’s Matilda (February 2026) and the UK tour of Hamilton (2024/25).
