Road and footpath works near Aykley Heads in Durham, County Durham, will begin on February 16, 2026, and are expected to cause travel delays for approximately 12 weeks. The Durham County Council project is the final part of a plan to improve walking and cycling paths between the business park and County Hall.

Drivers will face a one-way system that only allows vehicles to travel southbound between the Aykley Heads Business Park and County Hall. Northbound traffic will be banned past the County Hall barrier and mini-roundabout for the duration of the work.

The County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust has warned that these changes will likely slow down journeys and increase traffic around University Hospital North Durham. The works may also make it more difficult for patients, staff, and visitors to find parking on the hospital site.

People travelling to the hospital are encouraged to leave extra time for their journeys or use the Sniperley Park and Ride. Local bus services are also suggested as a way to avoid the roadworks and reduce the number of cars in the area.

While most work will happen during the week, some roads and footpaths may close at weekends so workers can finish the road surfaces. These weekend closures will depend on the weather conditions at the time.
