Durham, County Durham, is set to face significant travel disruption as heavy snow is forecast to hit the city early on the morning of February 15, 2026. The Met Office predicts a 95 per cent chance of heavy snow starting at approximately 6:00 AM, which could lead to icy roads and hazardous conditions for residents.

Extremely cold weather will accompany the snowfall, with temperatures expected to feel as low as -7°C due to biting wind chill. Strong wind gusts reaching 35mph are also predicted during the peak of the storm. A Yellow Cold Health Alert is already in place across the region and will remain active until 8:00 AM on February 16, 2026.

To keep major roads and bus routes open, Durham County Council has prepared a fleet of 40 gritters. These vehicles will treat the busiest roads, but residents are still warned to expect slippery conditions on steep hills and rural routes.

Rail passengers also face a difficult journey as the weather coincides with planned engineering works. According to LNER and National Rail, direct services to London Kings Cross have been cancelled, and the heavy snow is likely to cause further issues for local trains and buses.

Residents are encouraged to avoid any travel that is not essential during the early hours of Sunday morning. It is recommended to check for the latest updates from transport providers before starting any journey across the city or wider county.
