The York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust launched a new personalised maternity care plan on February 6, 2026. This initiative is designed to provide tailored support for women and birthing people in York, North Yorkshire, from their first pregnancy appointments through to care after the baby is born.

Expectant parents will typically receive the new plan during their initial booking appointment with a community midwife. The document allows families to record their medical choices and personal preferences so that their maternity team has a clear understanding of their specific needs.

The care plan was created alongside the Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnership (MNVP). By working with people who use these services, the trust aims to ensure that the support provided matches what local families actually want and require during birth.

This launch follows a series of improvements at the hospital, including the reopening of the Women’s Unit in August 2024 after a major refurbishment. These changes are part of a wider programme to improve safety and patient engagement following a 2023 report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) that highlighted the need for better services.

To make the service accessible to everyone in the community, the plans are available in several different languages and large print formats. The trust hopes this approach will create a more joined-up experience for families as they move between community midwife visits and hospital care.
