The Met Office has issued two yellow weather warnings for snow and ice in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, that are expected to cause travel delays and slippery conditions this weekend. The first warning remains in place until 10 am on 14 February 2026, while a second warning begins at 9 pm tonight and lasts until 10 am on 15 February 2026.

Residents can expect between 1 cm and 3 cm of snow at lower levels, while higher ground could see more significant build-up. Areas above 150 metres might see 3 cm to 7 cm of snow, and areas above 400 metres could see up to 15 cm of snow throughout the weekend.

To help keep the town moving, Gateshead Council is currently using its gritting fleet to treat 323 miles of priority roads. This work includes salting major routes like the Felling Bypass and the A695 through Blaydon to prevent ice from forming on the road surfaces.

Public transport is already seeing some disruption, with the Tyne and Wear Metro reporting delays caused by weather-related issues with signals and overhead lines. These technical problems come just before a major five-day line closure planned for the network between 16 February and 20 February 2026.

Forecasters also warn of a risk of freezing rain on Sunday morning, which is rain that turns to ice instantly when it hits cold ground. People are advised to take extra care on untreated pavements, stick to gritted paths where possible, and leave much more time for any necessary journeys.
