Residents in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, will soon need a digital permit to use local tips after Hertfordshire County Council approved a new entry system on February 11, 2026. The change is designed to reduce traffic queues and ensure the facilities are prioritised for local taxpayers.

The new system is set to launch in Spring 2026 and will apply to the Turnford Household Waste Recycling Centre. Unlike systems used in some other areas, residents will not need to book a specific day or time for their visit because the digital pass is only used to verify where they live.

For those who do not have internet access or find it difficult to use online services, the council will provide registration support over the telephone and in person at the centres. The update also includes a new option for people to pay for DIY waste that goes over the legal free limit, rather than being refused entry at the gate.

This decision follows a public consultation in 2025 where 67 per cent of residents supported the idea of an online pass to help manage the sites. According to Hertfordshire County Council, the plan aims to modernise the waste service while dealing with the rising costs of running the 16 recycling sites across the county.
