Sefton Council has started gritting more than 290 miles of roads across the borough, including key routes in Bootle, after a yellow weather warning for snow and ice was issued for February 14 and February 15, 2026. The weather warning means local teams are working to keep main routes clear as temperatures drop and icy conditions are expected to make travel difficult.

According to Sefton Council, gritters are focusing on busy main roads, bus routes, and roads that lead to hospitals. This priority road network includes major local routes such as the A5036 Dunnings Bridge Road and the A59 Ormskirk Road to help keep traffic moving through the area.

People living in the area are being told that side streets and most residential pavements will not be gritted, so they may be very slippery and hazardous. Officials suggest that anyone walking should stick to pavements along the main roads where possible and allow at least five minutes of extra time for all essential journeys.

For those who are struggling to keep their homes warm during the cold weather, the council has opened a network of Warm Spaces in local libraries and community hubs. Residents are also encouraged to check for travel updates from transport operators before they leave home in case of bus delays or short-notice changes to routes.
