York residents can look forward to a break from the winter chill as temperatures are set to reach 14C this coming weekend in North Yorkshire. According to the Met Office, the city will see much milder conditions on Saturday, February 21, and Sunday, February 22, 2026.

The predicted highs are double the seasonal average for this time of year, which usually stays around 7C. This change follows a cold start to the week where people in the city faced daytime temperatures of 5C and overnight frosts as low as -2C.

Forecasters expect the weekend to be generally cloudy but much drier than previous days. There is currently only a 30 per cent chance of rain on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, making it easier for people to get outdoors.

The warmer weather arrives in time for the final events of the JORVIK Viking Festival. The popular March to Coppergate is set for Saturday afternoon, and the lack of wintry showers is expected to help the outdoor parades and historical displays.

Families finishing the February half-term and visitors to the Acomb Artisan Market will also benefit from the break in the cold. Local businesses are hoping the 14C peak will encourage more people to head into the city to enjoy the mild weather.
