Sunderland City Council in Tyne and Wear began a new search for “Tech Mates” volunteers on February 13, 2026, to help the one-third of residents who lack basic digital skills learn how to use the internet and mobile phones.

The council is looking for people who can give one-to-one support to those who find technology difficult to use or have never been online before. According to Sunderland Smart City, these volunteers will help neighbours with foundational tasks such as sending emails and using video calling tools like Microsoft Teams.

Support will be provided through a network of 30 community hubs located across the city to make it easier for people to get help close to home. This initiative aims to give residents the confidence to use online forms and access essential services without having to visit council offices in person.

By improving digital skills, the council hopes to improve employment and health outcomes for families throughout the area. This programme is part of a long-term plan to ensure that the city’s modern 5G and fibre-optic networks are accessible to everyone regardless of their current skill level.

People interested in joining the project as a volunteer can apply through the council’s official volunteer page. Helpers will be trained to provide simple, direct advice to help more households get connected safely and easily.
