On February 16th, 2026, the UK Government announced that local elections in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, will take place in May as originally planned. This decision reverses an earlier plan to delay the vote by a year so that local authorities could focus on changing their organisational structures.

The Peterborough City Council had previously voted in January 2026 to request a postponement of the polls. There are 18 ward seats up for election, and council staff will now have to prepare for the voting process on the original spring timetable.

The reversal follows a legal challenge led by Reform UK, which argued that delaying the elections would take away people’s right to vote. The government has said it will provide extra funding to help councils manage the logistical work required by the late change in plans.

Peterborough MP Andrew Pakes supported the decision to keep the May election date, noting that it is important to maintain the regular voting cycle. Voters in the local area are encouraged to check their registration status to ensure they are ready for the upcoming vote.
