On February 17, 2026, the Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust was awarded more than £1 million in national funding to install solar panels and new lighting across its sites in Cheshire. The project is designed to reduce the environmental impact of local medical facilities and lower the cost of keeping the buildings running.

The funding will pay for the installation of 996 solar panels at Warrington Hospital. These panels are expected to generate 450,867 kilowatt-hours of electricity every year, providing a clean source of power that the hospital can use itself.

Halton Hospital will also benefit from the project through new energy-efficient LED lighting. It is estimated that these combined upgrades will save the hospital trust approximately £172,000 each year in energy bills.

This local work is part of a wider £74 million clean energy programme managed by Great British Energy and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. The initiative focuses on upgrading public buildings to help the health service reach net-zero, a goal where the hospitals aim to stop contributing to carbon emissions by 2040.

The money saved from the lower energy costs will be put back into frontline patient care and hospital services. This investment is intended to make the hospitals more resilient against changing energy prices while modernising local infrastructure for residents and staff.
