The Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust has been awarded £9.2 million to install energy-efficient lighting across its hospitals, including Basildon University Hospital in Essex. This regional project aims to provide brighter and more reliable lighting in wards and public areas for visitors and patients.
The work involves replacing old internal and external lights with modern LED technology. These upgrades are taking place at six locations, including sites in Basildon, Broomfield, Southend, Braintree, Orsett, and St Peter’s.
The new lights will also be installed in surgical theatres to improve working conditions for medical staff. According to the Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, the initiative is expected to cut carbon emissions by 1,598 tonnes every year.
Project leaders expect the change to save £1.6 million in annual running costs. These savings will be used to support frontline patient care once the work is finished by Autumn 2026.
