Tendring District Council has called on town and parish councils across the district to ensure their members follow official social media guidance. This request follows a conduct investigation into a councillor whose online posts raised concerns about professional standards.

The investigation began in November 2024 after a complaint was made about the councillor’s behaviour on social media. According to Tendring District Council, an official report was finalised in October 2025. The report identified potential issues including a lack of respect, bringing the office of councillor into disrepute, and the misuse of the councillor’s official position.

A formal hearing by the Town and Parish Councils Standards Sub-Committee was set for February 12, 2026. However, the councillor resigned from their role shortly before the meeting. Because the individual is no longer in office, the council cannot make a final decision on whether the official rules were broken.

The council’s Monitoring Officer is now encouraging local representatives to seek extra training to help them use social media professionally. The goal is to ensure that local council business is not derailed by online disputes or the misuse of official positions.

Officials hope these changes will restore public trust in local government. Residents in Clacton-on-Sea and the wider Tendring area can expect to see clearer standards for their local representatives in the coming months.
