On 19 February 2026, Gateshead Council was officially named as a finalist for the Most Improved Council prize at the 2026 Local Government Chronicle Awards, marking a major milestone for the local authority in Tyne and Wear. The recognition follows 18 months of work to change how the council is run and how it delivers services to residents.

The council started its improvement plan after a review by the Local Government Association in late 2024. As part of this effort, the council launched the Love Where You Live campaign to clean up local streets, which has received more than one million positive public reactions since it began.

Official inspectors also noted improvements in other areas, including a Good rating from Ofsted for children’s services and adult education in late 2024. These achievements helped the council join a shortlist of top-performing authorities that also includes North Northamptonshire Council.

This turnaround comes after the council faced a significant budget gap of 92 million pounds only two years ago. Under the current leadership, the authority has focused on making its finances more stable while meeting the high standards set by national regulators.

The final round of judging for the national prize will take place in April 2026. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on 10 June 2026. While the award recognizes internal changes, council leaders hope it will help the borough look more attractive to future partners and investment.
