Peterborough City Council is set to begin physical building work on the City Link project in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, before the end of March 2026. This project is the first part of a major plan to transform the area around the railway station and make it easier for people to walk into the city centre.

The construction will focus on the Queensgate roundabout area, where the council plans to remove two pedestrian subways. These will be replaced by new paths at street-level to create a more direct and welcoming route between the station and Cowgate. Local businesses and commuters have been told to expect some temporary disruption while these changes are made to the public space.

To make room for the new walkways, 35 trees will be removed from the roundabout area. Following a public consultation that finished on February 11, 2026, the council has promised to plant 49 new trees and seven smaller shrubs. The plans also include a new rain garden to help with drainage and improve the look of the landscape.

This work is being funded by a 48 million pound grant from the Levelling Up Fund, along with money from private partners. The council says the project will turn a disconnected part of the city into a brighter gateway that is easier for shoppers and visitors to navigate.
