Northamptonshire Police are asking for help to identify two people after a counterfeit banknote was used to buy items in Northampton, Northamptonshire. The incident took place at the Post Office on St Giles Street between 2.25pm and 2.40pm on November 21, 2025.

Officers released images on February 20, 2026, showing a couple they believe may have information about the reported fraud. Anyone who recognises the individuals or has information about the event should contact the police and mention incident number 25000683552.

According to the Bank of England, businesses and individuals cannot be paid back for any fake cash they accidentally accept. This policy puts a direct financial burden on local retailers, especially as seven independent shops in the town have already closed their doors in early 2026.

The police are urging shoppers and nearby business owners to stay alert to help prevent the spread of fake currency. Residents can also report financial crimes through the national service, Report Fraud (formerly Action Fraud), to help protect the local community.
