Commuters and students in Washington, Tyne and Wear, now have better access to the wider region following the opening of a new station at Northumberland Park on February 23, 2026. The new stop on the Northumberland Line provides a seamless interchange with the Tyne and Wear Metro, allowing passengers to switch between the two rail networks at a single location.

While Washington itself currently lacks its own train station, the new connection at Northumberland Park makes it easier for residents to reach jobs and schools in the north of the region after traveling into the Metro network. Previously, passengers had to navigate more complex transfers, but the new interchange is designed to save time and streamline travel between Northumberland and Tyne and Wear.

The project is a key element of a broader transport strategy by North East Mayor Kim McGuinness to restore rail services to communities that have been underserved for decades. This includes the allocation of £8.6 million to develop the business case for the Washington Metro Loop, which aims to bring the Metro directly into Washington in the future.

According to Nexus, Northumberland Park is the fifth of six stations to be completed as part of the reopened Northumberland Line. The final station at Bedlington is scheduled to open on March 29, 2026, marking the completion of the full passenger route.
