Parliament has officially approved plans to triple the size of the town centre development area in Stockport, Greater Manchester, clearing the way for 8,000 new homes by 2040. The decision, confirmed on February 23, 2026, allows the Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation to expand its work from 130 acres to 410 acres across the heart of the town.

The Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council says the project will now include underused land east of the A6 corridor near the Merseyway Shopping Centre. To support the growing population, the plan includes building a new secondary school and a modern health hub within the town centre.

A key part of the next stage is a project called Stockport 8, which will create a neighbourhood of 1,300 homes near the railway viaduct. This specific part of the plan involves an investment of between £250 million and £350 million to create a sustainable community in the town.

Council Leader Mark Roberts described the move as a landmark moment that will help the local authority provide more jobs and opportunities for residents. People living in the area can expect to see large-scale building work and changes to the local skyline over the next 15 years as new neighbourhoods and a riverside park are developed.
