A 20-year-old man from Carlton, Nottinghamshire, will stand trial this spring following the fatal stabbing of a young man last year. Matthew Smith, of First Avenue, is charged with the murder of Marley Gascoine and has entered a plea of not guilty ahead of his court date at Nottingham Crown Court on 5 May 2026.

The victim, who was also 20 years old, died from a single stab wound to the chest during an incident on 10 November 2025. His family described him as a fantastic son and big brother after the attack took place at a residential underpass on Abbotsford Drive.

Officers from Nottinghamshire Police carried out searches at several local properties on 23 February 2026. During these searches, they arrested three men and one woman on suspicion of helping an offender in relation to the case.

Detective Chief Inspector Ruby Burrow is leading the investigation into the death. Police are still encouraging anyone with information about what happened to get in touch through their official incident portal.
