The Northumberland Football Association launched a search for new volunteers on 24 February 2026 to help make local matches in the county more welcoming and respectful. These Positive Football Ambassadors will work at games to encourage good behaviour from the sidelines and support local teams during their matchdays.

The role is open to parents, fans, and regular club volunteers who want to help improve the atmosphere at both youth and adult games. These ambassadors will focus on following the Grassroots Code, which sets out how everyone involved in the sport should treat each other with kindness and respect.

By having volunteers manage the sidelines, the football association hopes to take some of the pressure off club staff and referees. This move aims to stop bad behaviour before it starts and make sure that young players and match officials feel safe and supported while on the pitch.

The recruitment drive is part of a larger plan to ensure football stays a positive experience for families across the community. This search follows the appointment of a Disability Football Ambassador on 6 February 2026 to help clubs offer more chances for everyone to play. The association is also looking for people to join a special Inclusion Advisory Group that ensures football remains a sport for all people in the area.
