Sunderland Libraries is hosting a series of free story sessions and craft workshops across Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, to celebrate World Book Day in early March 2026. The programme, which includes activities specifically for babies and toddlers, aims to encourage young children to enjoy reading through low-cost activities at local library branches.

The celebrations begin on Wednesday 4 March 2026 with a special session at the City Library at Museum and Winter Gardens at 11:00 am. According to Sunderland Libraries, this event is part of the Rhyme & Shine programme, which uses music and stories to help children up to age four develop language and social skills.

On World Book Day, which falls on Thursday 5 March 2026, Houghton Library will host a stories and crafts session at 10:00 am. Washington Library will also hold a similar event at 1:00 pm that day, followed by a ‘Creative With Computers’on Friday 6 March 2026 at 1.30pm.

These local activities are taking place during the National Year of Reading, a UK-wide campaign with the motto Go All In. The National Literacy Trust is supporting the year-long initiative to help more people discover the joy of reading.

Families can also use their official book tokens at participating shops from 12 February until 15 March 2026. These library events are designed to be accessible for parents and carers looking for educational things to do with their children during the school term.
