Residents and visitors in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, should prepare for road closures and changed parking arrangements as the city celebrates City Day on Saturday, 7 March 2026. The event marks the fourth anniversary of the area being granted city status and will feature festivities across the town centre and seafront.
According to the Southend-on-Sea City Council, the day will include the official opening of the new Southend Museums Collections Centre. This new facility is located inside the Beecroft Art Gallery on Victoria Avenue and will display thousands of local artefacts, such as Roman finds and vintage EKCO radios.
Celebrations are planned for the High Street, Royal Square, Pier Piazza, and City Beach, which will likely lead to travel delays and high pedestrian numbers. Visitors can find more details on the Visit Southend website regarding activities in Leigh, Westcliff, Southchurch, and Shoeburyness.
The council has also proposed a freeze on all pay-and-display parking charges for the 2026-2027 financial year to help local residents. Drivers and commuters are encouraged to check local notices and allow extra time for their journeys due to the expected crowds in the city centre.
