New figures from Essex Police show that reports of violence and sexual offences in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, rose to 264 incidents during January 2026. This increase means these types of offences now account for nearly half of all crime reported in the town, which saw a total of 537 incidents in the first month of the year.

The total number of crimes in the area grew from 513 in December 2025, marking an end to the usual winter dip in activity. Chief Inspector Stuart Austin, the Tendring District Commander, has stated that his main goals are to reduce crime and improve the number of cases that are successfully solved.

Despite the focus on making more arrests, the legal system is facing significant pressure with a backlog of cases. Current data suggests that trials for sexual offences in the region are being scheduled as far away as 2028 or 2029.

Essex Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner recently approved the policing budget for the 2026-27 year to help manage these local challenges. This follows a previous budget increase of 24.9 million pounds that was put in place to support emergency services across the county.
