The Stockport Housing, Economy & Environment Scrutiny Committee will meet on 5 March 2026 to review major updates to the borough’s housing, road, and nature plans. This meeting in Stockport, Greater Manchester, will address the first results of a large public consultation and the start of a building project designed to create 1,300 new homes near the town centre.

The first part of the Stockport 8 project is expected to begin on-site in the first three months of 2026. This phase requires the temporary move of a bus depot and the use of a compulsory purchase order to secure land near Viaduct Street for new public walking routes.

Members will look at a summary of responses from the Stockport Local Plan consultation, which finished on 21 December 2025. This plan is important for residents because it will help decide where new buildings are allowed and how the local countryside and Green Belt are protected in the coming years.

The Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council also faces a 26 March 2026 deadline to publish its first report on how it will look after local wildlife. Additionally, a local business grant previously known as the UK Shared Prosperity Fund is being renamed the Economy, Regeneration and Development Flexible Grant for the 2026-27 period.

The meeting, which starts at 6.00 pm, will include updates from the Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation regarding the multi-million pound regeneration of the town centre. These plans aim to transform old industrial land into new neighbourhoods with improved public spaces and facilities.
