The Met Office has warned that Banbury, Oxfordshire, is likely to face a period of heavy rain and strong winds between 18 March and 31 March 2026. This unsettled weather could cause travel delays and increase the risk of surface-water flooding across the community.

The town is currently protected by a £17 million flood defence project that was finished in 2012. According to Internet Geography, this system helps keep the River Cherwell from flooding approximately 441 homes and 73 businesses.

During periods of heavy rain, the Environment Agency closely monitors local landmarks such as the Banbury railway station and the A361. These areas have historically been sensitive to rising water levels during stormy weather.

To prepare for the weather Banbury Town Council maintains local parks and uses specialized vehicles to manage the impact on public spaces. Residents and event organisers at local venues like The Mill Arts Centre are encouraged to review their plans for the second half of the month.

While this month is expected to be wet, experts at the Met Office believe 2026 will still be one of the warmest years ever recorded. Temperatures in the United Kingdom are expected to rise gradually once the rainy spell passes later in the month.
