Thames Valley Police closed a section of the Oxford Canal path in Banbury, Oxfordshire, on 15 March 2026 due to what they described as a contained incident. Officers cordoned off the area near Spiceball Park, and the public were advised to stay away while emergency services dealt with the situation.
Witnesses saw several police vehicles parked in the Spiceball car park and a man wearing a white forensic suit at the scene. Temporary barriers were set up around a wooded part of the park and along the main footpath next to the water.
According to updates from TVP Cherwell, there was no wider risk to the local community during the operation. Police maintained a high presence in the area throughout the day to manage the scene and ensure public safety.
The closure affected many residents who use the path for daily exercise or to walk to work in the town centre. Authorities later confirmed that a man was found deceased at the scene. His death is currently being treated as unexplained but not suspicious, and a file is being prepared for the coroner.
