Thames Valley Police arrested a 21-year-old man on suspicion of assault and of possessing an offensive weapon in public after an armed response unit was called to a disturbance outside The Musketeer pub in Banbury, Oxfordshire, on Saturday, February 7, 2026. Officers attended the scene on Ruscote Avenue at about 7:50pm following reports of a group of men seen with weapons. No injuries were reported, but the heavy police presence, which included armed officers, caused concern among people in the town centre.

After attending the pub, officers stopped a taxi on Horsefair following reports it had left the scene; police said no weapons were found in the vehicle. The arrested man remained in police custody as of Sunday, February 8. The force has increased visible reassurance patrols in Banbury — beginning on Sunday and continuing into Monday — to reassure residents and reduce the risk of further trouble in the local community.

The incident has renewed conversations among residents about nighttime safety for the town centre and high-street businesses. This comes amid wider concerns among local traders; for example, dessert shops such as Chocoberry, located at 25 High Street and which operates late on weekends, are part of a changing nighttime economy that local police say they are monitoring. Thames Valley Police are asking anyone with information about the public order incident to call 101 or make a report on their website, quoting reference number 43260064066.
