Residents and opposition politicians in Basildon, Essex, are demanding a change in leadership at Basildon Borough Council after months of disrupted meetings and democratic disputes. Public anger has grown following a string of incidents that led to official sessions being called off and a failed attempt by the council to postpone local elections.

The controversy reached a peak when the council leadership tried to cancel the local elections meant to take place in May 2026 to focus on a major restructure of local government. This decision was eventually reversed by the government on 16 February 2026, following a tense meeting on 29 January 2026 where residents waved placards and chanted for their right to vote.

Safety and behaviour at official meetings have also caused concern since a full council session on 18 September 2025 was stopped due to a general disturbance. During that event, there were claims that a councillor followed a resident out of the chamber and allegations that a member of staff was assaulted, though an internal review found no evidence of an assault.

Further tension has been caused by reports of threats and bullying, including an incident in August 2025 where a man was banned from the council offices for making death threats against staff. Councillor Sam Journet from Reform UK has also faced accusations of verbal abuse toward council officers, adding to the difficult atmosphere within the local authority.

The leader of the Basildon Conservatives, Andy Barnes, and other critics are now calling for Council Leader Gavin Callaghan to resign. They claim the current leadership has lost control of council business and damaged the trust of the local community.
