Essex Police reported on February 18, 2026, that high-intensity road safety operations in Basildon have identified more than 100 offences at known collision hotspots. These efforts, part of a wider county initiative, aim to make the streets safer for all road users by targeting dangerous driving behaviours.
During a dedicated safety day on February 3, 2026, officers identified 114 offences and spoke with 293 members of the public about road safety. Enforcement at Broadmayne and Southmayne identified several dangerous violations, including two vehicles observed racing side-by-side on Southmayne.
Officers also monitored traffic near North Crescent Primary School, where 17 drivers were caught going over the 20mph limit, with one car reaching 36mph. In another stop, a 93-year-old driver was found to be using a medically revoked licence after failing a roadside eyesight test.
A separate crackdown (Operation Limit) resulted in 14 arrests in a single day, 13 of which were for drink or drug driving offences. The Safer Essex Roads Partnership is supporting these local changes as part of a wider plan to eliminate road deaths and serious injuries in the county by 2040.
Adam Pipe, the head of roads policing, said that seeing drivers change their habits is a major sign of success. He noted that while statistics are important, the lasting impact of safer driving behaviour on local roads is the most pleasing result of the work.
