Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has opened applications for its Councillor Community Grant Scheme, giving each borough councillor £2,000 to support community projects in their ward. The scheme, now in its sixth year, allows community and voluntary groups to apply for grants from £250 to £3,000 when councillors choose to pool their funding.

Applications have been open since 1 June 2026 and will close at midday on 1 March 2027. Since its launch, the scheme has allocated more than £350,000 to over 350 initiatives across the borough. Recent recipients used the money for plants and gardening equipment, signage, kitchen equipment and a community mural. Cllr John McKay, Cabinet Member for Communities, Partnerships and Inclusion, said, “Our communities are something we can all be proud of, but they need continued support to truly thrive,” and urged groups to speak to their ward councillors about their ideas.

The scheme runs on a reimbursement basis, meaning successful applicants have eight weeks from approval to buy approved items and submit proof of payment for their costs to be refunded. Eligible organisations include unincorporated groups, registered charities, charitable incorporated organisations, community interest companies, community amateur sports clubs, and town or parish councils that benefit residents in the borough. Schools may only apply where the wider community beyond pupils and staff will benefit, and faith organisations can seek funding for activities that reach people outside their usual congregation. Groups must have a bank account in the organisation’s name and a governing document to apply.

The grant programme aligns with the council’s priorities of encouraging pride in local communities, protecting the natural environment, and delivering high-quality services. Decisions are made monthly throughout the year, and early applications are encouraged to ensure councillors still have budget available. Groups needing help with the process can get support from Basingstoke Voluntary Action, which advises voluntary and community organisations on establishing themselves and preparing grant applications.
