Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has officially published the list of candidates standing for election in the upcoming local polls on 7 May 2026. Residents can now review the names of those running for seats on the borough council, Hampshire County Council, and various parish councils.
The list, known as the Statement of Persons Nominated, was released following the close of nominations on 9 April 2026. Voters who wish to see who is standing in their area can view the full details on the council website or use the Who Can I Vote For portal.
This year’s elections will involve contests for 18 of the 54 seats on the borough council and 10 county council divisions. Some of the county contests were carried over from 2025. While most areas will see a vote, eight parish wards have been declared uncontested as only one candidate was put forward for each, meaning no polling will take place in those specific locations.
The council has been under no overall control since 2022. The current administration is a coalition between the Independent Forum—comprising the Basingstoke & Deane Independents, Greens, the All In Party, and independent councillors—and the Liberal Democrats.
Residents are reminded that polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm on 7 May 2026, and photographic identification is required to vote in person. For those choosing to vote by post, applications must be submitted by 5pm on 21 April 2026. If a postal voter decides to hand-deliver their completed ballot pack to the Civic Offices or a polling station, they must speak to an authorised member of staff to complete a required return form, otherwise, the vote will be rejected.
The deadline to register to vote is 11.59pm on 20 April 2026, and any applications for a proxy vote must be received by 5pm on 28 April 2026.
