Hampshire Constabulary arrested a 58-year-old man in Basingstoke, Hampshire, on 27 February 2026 after live facial recognition cameras identified him as a wanted shoplifter. Robert Romaine, of Constantine Way, was stopped by officers after he walked past a police van equipped with the scanning technology at The Malls shopping centre.

The camera system alerted the police that Mr Romaine was wanted in connection with a theft that happened in July 2025. He was accused of taking more than £420 worth of clothing from the Superdry store in the town.

Following his arrest, Mr Romaine appeared at Southampton Magistrates Court on 28 February 2026. He pleaded guilty to the shoplifting charge and was ordered by the court to pay a fine for the offence.

According to crime figures from the Basingstoke Centre policing team, shoplifting is a significant issue in the community, with 54 incidents reported in January 2026 alone. Police officials stated that the use of this camera technology allows them to identify repeat offenders quickly and bring them to court within 24 hours.

To address concerns about how the technology works, the police explained that the system deletes biometric data immediately if a person is not a match. Inspector Tracey Purcell said the operation was a successful way to maintain public safety and support local businesses by tackling the crimes that matter most to the area.
