Four local people were admitted as Freemen of Broxtowe, the highest honours that Broxtowe Borough Council can bestow, during a ceremony at the Council Offices in Beeston on 28 January 2026. The titles recognise long-term contributions to the community in areas including charity, youth work and local history.
Among those recognised was Dr Peter Robinson, a leader of the Beeston and District Civic Society, who was honoured for helping to promote awareness of Beeston’s historical significance and making local heritage more accessible. He was joined by 82-year-old Richard Pratt, who has dedicated more than 30 years to supporting young people through scouting, patient involvement and other community roles.
The council also honoured Mark Preston, also known by his stage name Miss Zandra. According to the council, he has raised more than £520,000 for charities in Eastwood and the surrounding areas through performances as his alter-ego.
The final award went to Ruth Hyde OBE, the council’s former Chief Executive, who retired in September 2025. The council said the honour recognises her strategic leadership on major regeneration and funding initiatives, strategic planning and housing, and work to champion community safety and cohesion.
Broxtowe’s Freemen and Aldermen page states these titles are the highest honours the council can bestow. The Freeman Ceremony took place on 28 January 2026.
