Community groups in Bolton are being encouraged to apply for grants of up to £40,000 through the Greater Manchester Green Spaces Fund before applications close at noon on 3 August 2026. The fund, launched by Mayor Andy Burnham in 2022, has already invested over £4 million across the city region and supported 122 projects including orchards, green alleyways, allotments and community gardens. So far more than 28,000 square metres of new green space have been created and nearly 400,000 square metres of existing space improved.

Grants from the Greater Manchester Green Spaces Fund range from £2,000 to £40,000 and are open to registered charities, community groups, CIOs, residents associations, CICs, schools and community benefit societies. Applicants must have permission from the landowner and a bank account that has been open for at least three months. A dedicated advisor, Susan Whittle from Lancashire Wildlife Trust, covers the Bolton and Bury area and can be reached at [email protected].

Bolton Green Umbrella is also offering additional smaller grants and can help local groups with their applications. Mayor Andy Burnham said the fund was created to tackle inequalities in access to high-quality green spaces, particularly in areas where people need them most. All applications must be submitted through the Flexi-Grant portal by the August deadline.
