On February 12, 2026, the Greater Manchester Police Bolton neighbourhood team set up a new bin in Bolton, Greater Manchester, where people can safely and anonymously get rid of knives. This permanent unit is located right in the heart of the town centre to make it easy for residents to drop off weapons without having to visit a police station.

The bin was donated by Bolton Council and features a unique look created by local young people under the age of 17 through a community competition. This project aims to encourage people to give up dangerous blades while making the local streets safer for everyone.

Anyone who uses the bin to hand over a weapon can do so without being identified and will not face any legal trouble for the act of throwing it away. Police officers are also spending time in the town centre to talk with shoppers and shop staff about safety and how to properly dispose of dangerous items.

This move comes as local authorities work to reduce violent crime across the region following several serious incidents in nearby areas like Chadderton and Oldham. By placing the bin in a busy public space, the policing team hopes to discourage people from carrying weapons and help visitors and workers feel more secure in the community.
