Work began this week to turn a historic 16th-century building in Bolton, Greater Manchester, into a new restaurant. The project at the Old Ale House on Ainsworth Lane aims to bring the Grade II listed structure back into use for the community.

Owners Sophie Stew and Marc Gough bought the site in 2020 and have been working to reveal its original features. This includes uncovering the original brickwork and stone floors that had been hidden for years.

Research shared by the Ancient Bolton – Pre 1800’s Bolton group helped the owners confirm the building was once known as the Bowling Green pub. The building dates back to 1580 and is one of the oldest standing structures in the town.

The renovations involve traditional building methods and designs from Neil Pike Architects for a modern glass-link extension. Once finished, the new dining spot is expected to help increase the number of visitors to the Tonge Fold area.
