On Tuesday 3 March 2026, Greater Manchester Police authorised temporary extra search powers in Bolton, Greater Manchester, following a large fight the night before. The measure was put in place to help officers prevent further violence and keep residents safe in the town centre.

The decision followed a violent disturbance at the Bolton Interchange on Monday 2 March 2026. Around 30 people were involved in the clash, which reportedly led to several people being assaulted during the evening.

These extra powers allow officers to stop and search anyone in a specific area without needing the usual “reasonable suspicion” that a crime has happened. These temporary rules are designed to act as a deterrent and allow the Bolton District Police to maintain order in busy public spaces.

By 5 March 2026, at least one person had been charged in connection with the mass brawl at the transport hub. Police continue to monitor the town centre to ensure there is no further trouble between the groups involved.
