Commuters in Bootle, Merseyside, are seeing eight major bus routes diverted this February as roadworks begin on Stanley Road. The repairs are expected to cause delays of up to 40 minutes for people travelling into Liverpool city centre during peak hours.

The work is part of a project to fix drainage issues and resurface the road between Boundary Street and Balliol Road. Councils say the project aims to prevent more serious road closures later in the year.

The changes affect several services, including Arriva North West routes 47, 52 and 53, and the X2 express route, which is operated by Stagecoach Merseyside. Merseytravel has confirmed that buses are being rerouted along Commercial Road, meaning they will bypass some regular stops near Kirkdale Station.

Officials from both Liverpool City Council and Sefton Council are coordinating the project as part of a wider plan to improve the area’s main roads. The work began in early February 2026 and is currently expected to continue until mid-March 2026.
