Charminster Library on Strouden Avenue in Bournemouth, Dorset, will remain closed indefinitely after surveys revealed serious safety issues and repair costs of more than £680,000. BCP Council confirmed the decision on 26 March 2026, stating it does not have the money available for the extensive work required. The building has been shut since 22 December 2025, when a part of the ceiling collapsed.

Detailed inspections of the site found that several major repairs are needed to make the building safe again. These tasks include removing and cleaning exposed asbestos, replacing broken roof joists, and installing new lighting and heaters. The council had hoped to improve the site with technology to allow access outside of regular hours, but a funding bid to Arts Council England was recently rejected.

Local residents who use the library for books and internet access are being asked to visit other branches in the area for the time being. The nearest alternatives are at Winton and Castlepoint, which are both located less than a mile away from the Charminster building. Councillor Sharon Carr-Brown has said she will work with the council to look for ways to fix the building and return the service to the local community.
