Residents of Canvey Island, Essex, can learn how to start their own local power projects at an online meeting on 18 February 2026, 6:00pm–7:00pm GMT. The session is organised by Castle Point Borough Council and Community Energy South to show how community-owned energy can help lower electricity bills.
The event will explain how residents can set up a local group to install solar panels on the roofs of community buildings and sports pavilions. These projects allow people to invest in local energy through community share models so that surplus revenue stays within the area to fund local causes.
This new push for clean energy follows the formal submission of the Castle Point Plan 2026–2043 for independent examination on 6 February 2026. By creating their own electricity, neighbours can work together to protect the local environment and increase local resilience, reducing reliance on the national grid.
The project forms part of a larger programme supported by Essex County Council that helps residents take control of their energy use. The webinar draws on Community Energy South’s ‘Essex Pathway’ approach, developed in partnership with Essex County Council, and Canvey Island Town Council is also a stakeholder in identifying suitable local buildings for pilot solar installations.
The public webinar runs from 6:00pm to 7:00pm GMT on 18 February and is open to Canvey Island residents. It builds on previous work in the area, including a £2.3 million Green Homes Grant-funded programme that upgraded 250 park homes at Kings Park Village.
