Residents on Canvey Island looking to better protect themselves from scams can attend a free Fraud Awareness Advice Session at Canvey Library on Thursday 4 June 2026. The event, held from 10:30AM to 12:00PM, is open to everyone and requires no advance booking.

The session is organised by Essex Libraries in partnership with the Essex Police Serious Crime Directorate. A specialist fraud officer will be on hand to provide practical guidance on how to identify the latest types of fraud and what steps residents should take if they are worried they have been targeted by a scam.

This event comes as public concern regarding fraud continues to grow across the region. According to recent survey data from the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex, 82% of residents identified fraud and scams as a top concern in 2024, marking a 5% increase from the previous year. This rise in anxiety follows findings from Action Fraud that showed a 6.1% increase in fraud offences across the county between 2023 and 2024, resulting in £68.5 million in reported losses.

While the district of Castle Point, which includes Canvey Island, maintains low crime rates, local residents have reported higher levels of concern regarding crime and safety in recent surveys. This session aims to offer direct support and tools to help the community feel more secure.

For those interested in learning more, the informal drop-in session allows attendees to speak directly with an officer and gather essential information to help spot and avoid potential fraudulent activities.
