Cold Weather and Icy Roads Expected for Canvey Island

People living on Canvey Island, Essex, should prepare for colder weather and an increased risk of ice from February 7, 2026. The Met Office’s regional long-range forecast update indicates a southward shift of the jet stream that may bring colder air across the South East between February 7 and February 16, 2026, with colder nights and wintry hazards possible.

Essex Highways says its winter gritting service is ready and that key routes serving the island will be prioritised. In particular, the A130 (Canvey Way) and the B1014 (Canvey Road) are treated as main arteries and are routinely prioritised for salting because coastal and marshland areas can be prone to freezing.

Castle Point Borough Council is urging residents to check vehicles and heating supplies ahead of the cold spell. The council says it plans to support vulnerable people and can open rest centres or community buildings if required to provide a warm place for those in need, and it is asking neighbours to look out for one another.

Canvey Island is largely low-lying and close to the Thames Estuary, which increases exposure to biting winds and raised humidity that can make black ice more likely on roads. Local leaders have previously raised concerns about the island’s limited road links — an issue highlighted in a BBC report on 16 January 2026 — making it particularly important that drivers take extra care during the forecast cold spell.
