Police and safety partners held a day of action on Canvey Island on 7 May 2026 to target dangerous driving and improve road safety across the region. The operation was part of an ongoing county-wide effort called Vision Zero, which aims to eliminate all road deaths and serious injuries in Essex by 2040.
Working alongside the Safer Essex Roads Partnership and Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, Essex Police combined enforcement activity with community outreach. Officers spoke to more than 180 children and parents at William Read Primary School about road safety and visited over 20 businesses at the Knightswick Shopping Centre to engage with more than 300 members of the public.
The enforcement side of the operation resulted in a series of traffic offences. Police recorded 31 mobile phone offences, 28 seatbelt offences, and issued 7 tickets for careless driving. Additionally, 7 vehicles were seized because the drivers did not have insurance. Across a wider area including Basildon, Leigh, and Canvey Island, officers recorded over 50 speeding offences, with some drivers travelling at 44mph in 30mph zones.
Officers also dealt with more serious incidents, including the arrest of three people on suspicion of drug driving. A stolen vehicle was recovered after the driver failed to stop for police, and one driver had their licence revoked after failing a roadside sight test. These actions are part of a sustained campaign that saw a similar safety day held on the island in February 2025.
The Vision Zero project involves multiple agencies, including Essex County Council, working together to address the factors that lead to collisions. While Essex has seen a 52 per cent reduction in deaths and serious injuries on its roads between 2005 and 2021, authorities maintain that continued engagement is necessary to protect the community.
